What do you mean? What I mean is thesis statements are lame. I just..I just don’t get them. Look, remember last week when you told me Ps5 is better than Xbox Series X Yeah. Well, that argument you gave me--that Ps5 had better games such as SPider man, and that you thought the performance was better on playstation--that was a thesis statement. It was? Sure. You make arguments all the time. A Thesis statement is just the core argument of an essay. When you write something, you call it a thesis statement. When you argue with friends, well, you just argue. Hmm, but thesis statements seem so complicated in class. Look, I take the three point approach when writing thesis statements. You have an approach? Absolutely. Here is what I do. I make an arguable statement and follow it with three reasons. Boom--thesis complete. What do you mean you make an arguable statement? WHen you write an argumentative essay, you have to take a position on a topic, and that position has to be arguable. For example, you can’t argue that Alaska is cold in the winter. Everyone knows Alaska is cold in the winter. It is a given. However, you can argue something like Alaska is a terrible place to live in the winter because the nights are long, the weather is freezing, and many people get seasonal depression. The idea that Alaska is a terrible place to live in the winter can be argued by someone who loves freezing in the winter--or perhaps a polar bear. Dude, I think I am starting to get it. Well, I’ll be the judge of that. Let’s see if you can create a thesis on demand On demand? Yeah, can you think of a thesis on the spot? Here I will give you a topic. Then give me a thesis statement. Your topic is coffee. Go. Hmm...coffee is a good drink because...it gives you energy. Dude, that was lame. Let’s see you do a thesis statement on demand then--Mr. Know it all, three point approach guy. Ok. Here I go. Coffee is an overrated stimulant that has been backed by millions of dollars of advertising to convince consumers that drinking coffee is normal and necessary. In reality, coffee is acidic and hard on teeth, does not provide the lasting energy people think it does, and can be detrimental to people with anxiety. Jeez...you just made that up? Yup. Did you see how I made an arguable statement--that coffee is an overrated stimulant. The overrated part is arguable. Then I backed up this statement with three supporting reasons for my argument. Do you know why I did this? Why? These three reasons I gave, I am going to use each of them as a body paragraph in my essay. Body paragraph one will talk about coffee being hard on teeth, paragraph two will talk about how coffee actually can make people more tired, and the third paragraph I will talk about coffee and how it impacts people with anxiety. So, you mean the thesis statement sets up the rest of the essay? Yes! The thesis statement is the control center of your essay. It dictates what you are going to say for the rest of your essay.Here, let’s try another topic. Think of a thesis for the iphone 12. Go. Hmm, the Iphone 12 is the best phone on the market because the super retina xdr displays are top notch, the ceramic shield cover is the toughest glass ever installed on a phone, and the video streaming capabilities are incredible. Dude, that was amazing! I know, I know. I am pretty cool. Well, let’s see if you can think of a thesis three point thesis statement from five topics on the following list.
