Reaction and dynamic torque measurement are two main methods of measuring torque on a rotating shaft. Reaction torque measurement is performed when acceleration is not required. An inline torque sensor, in this case, is placed directly to a motor or engine in a fixed position with no movement. Reaction torque measurement doesn’t usually require high accuracy and is mostly used for brake testing, viscosity measurement in mixers and small motor testing. For most applications, however, rotary torque measurement is used. It is achieved by placing an inline torque sensor between torque transmitting components (i.e. a motor and a gear, an engine and a pump, a crankshaft and a wheel) or in the drive shaft. This method allows the torque sensor to be fitted directly on a drive line or with the help of couplings as close as possible to a torque of interest and to avoid possible errors and losses from the transition. Inline torque measurement is used for a variety of applications, such as motor output horse power measurement, engine or electric motor testing, hydraulic pump testing, turbine testing, efficiency testing, testing of new driveline designs and many more.
