Caladesi Island State Park. Dunedin Florida. Clearwater Beach Florida

Isolated Caladesi island is located between Dunedin (Honeymoon Island) and Clearwater Beach. We explain several ways to access and navigate the island (so you won't be a castaway on the island like on the TV show Gilligan's Island). Explore pristine beaches packed with sea shells. Walk a nature trail with 4 ecosystems (Palm, Slash Pine, Oak Hammock and Beach Dunes) and kayak mangrove forest. We discover an original homestead site on the island and an old growth double trunk slash pine called the harp tree. Discover the ecosystems and critters of the island working together to keep wild life strong. The nature trail is a great walk. Caladesi Island is accessible only by a long walk from Clearwater Beach or by boat, which keeps the numbers of people who travel here low. There is a tiny marina for private boats but most people go for day trips via the ferry, a short but fun ride with captains who treat the riders with stories about the interesting history of the island and the area. The nature walk takes you through four different Florida ecosystems. First there is a palm forest where the FL state tree, the sandal palm, is abundant. There have been controlled burns here and it’s fascinating to see the scorched trunks and the re-growth. Then the trail takes you through slash pine forest, providing lots of shade and going past small ponds where the tannin from fallen needles makes the water look like iced tea. Here you’ll find the historic harp tree where fun photos have been taken for many years. Then on to the majestic oak forest with plenty of shade and rest stops. After that follow the sandy path towards the beach, passing large tannin ponds where bird life abounds. You might find a diamond back rattler calming sunning itself on the path but I did not see any. The waves of the beach can be heard before they can be seen, giving motivation to the last several steps before walking out on to the south end of one of the loveliest beaches in the world. White sand, clear blue water, few people, rolling gentle waves, refreshing sea breeze, this beach is wonderful. On a luck day, dolphin can be spotted just off shore. Walking north on the beach will bring you to the busier part of the island where umbrellas are rented and day trippers swim and play. From there the path leads back to the snack shop and ferry dock. A great walk and a vision of FL before the high rise condos and paved parking lots The Caladesi Island kayak trail is a three mile loop, but after a half mile through the mangrove tunnels, you emerge in St. Joseph Sound after Marker 6 and you can shorten the trip by paddling back to the start or over to the causeway. If you continue on the trail, you head back into the mangrove forest for a three-mile loop to the Scharer Homestead Ruins, which date to the early 1800s #nature #clearwaterbeach #dunedin
