Ikebukuro Mitake Shrine has long been loved by local people as the guardian deity of the area around the west exit of Ikebukuro Station. It is said to have the power to ward off disasters, bad luck, and fires, based on the myth that the main deity, Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, escaped disaster with the help of the Kusanagi sword.The exact date of its founding is unknown, but it is said to have been founded around the Tensho era (1573-1592).The annual festival of Ikebukuro Mitake Shrine is held at the same time as the Fukuro Festival. Many people believe that a mikoshi (portable shrine) is an essential part of a festival, so the two have been held together since the 3rd Fukuro Festival in 1970. The Fukuro Festival, held over two days as a "Mikoshi Festival," began in 1968 and will be celebrating its 57th anniversary this year. The highlight of the event is the "Evening Mikoshi Grand Parade" featuring 15 mikoshi, which is the climax of the festival. The sight of around 4,000 people carrying the mikoshi is a spectacular sight. In addition to the flute and drum parade, there will also be performances such as Hawaiian hula, Tahitian dance, Japanese drumming, and lion dancing.
