Overview: The EJ20x swap overall has recently received a bad wrap I feel, it is a fantastic budget friendly engine to swap into your Single (Intake Only) AVCS 06-14 'WRX/05-09' LGT or OBXT/04-13' FXT/04-07 STI as long as you follow my outline to properly delete the Exhaust AVCS, without completing this critical step the engine will feel gutless until 3,000rpm and your tuner will hate you. I have done several of these in various Subaru configurations and have yielded overall positive results in all examples. This customer’s WRX will be tuned conservatively on 93 pump gas, however because the 9.5:1 compression ratio these motors prefer e85. Its best to hand select your engine from the importer by compression testing yourself and looking it over before buying. If you are installing this engine in a dual AVCS equipped 08-21' STI, just plug exhaust avcs sensors & solenoids in and run it as is. It is also a great idea to replace valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, rear main seal, intake/exhaust gaskets, spark plugs, coolant crossover pipe o-rings, remove oil feed lines banjo bolt filters, etc. while the engine is on the motor stand.
