Category 4 Hurricane Helene Landfall Coverage

Hurricane Helene has started to intensify a little more, and recon planes are finding that the storm is deepening again, along with an improving satellite imagery appearance. The storm is likely to rapidly intensify tonight and tomorrow, and reach the Florida Panhandle as a devastating Category 4 hurricane Thursday evening. Landfall is expected somewhere near Apalachee Bay, and destructive winds of over 100 miles per hour are possible in Tallahassee. Hurricane conditions will also spread into Georgia, with strong tropical storm conditions possible in Atlanta on Friday. Helene is set to cause a catastrophic storm surge of up to 20 feet, coupled with its potential landfall intensity would make it the most destructive storm to strike the region on record, eclipsing Idalia of last year. A storm surge and strong winds will spread far away from the storm center, with hurricane conditions possible northwest of Tampa. The entire Florida Peninsula is under at least a tropical storm warning at this time. Rainfall of up to 15 inches is also likely to cause flooding well inland. Elsewhere, Tropical Storm John has reformed off the coast of southern Mexico, and is once again expected to rapidly intensify into a hurricane in the next couple of days and make landfall in Mexico, exacerbating serious flooding issues in the region.
