Watch the mesmerizing motion of the Wilberforce Pendulum, a classic physics experiment which illustrates coupled mechanical oscillations. The Wilberforce Pendulum The Wilberforce Pendulum, named so after the inventor, Lionel Robert Wilberforce (1861-1944), who invented it in 1896, is a prime illustrative example of coupled mechanical oscillators. As first glance it is a deceptively simple device: A mass is suspended in a helical spring which at the same time allows the mass to follow an up/down path and a rotational twisting motion. The mass is thus allowed to move vertically and to rotate. However, these two modes of oscillation, the vertical mode and the twisting mode, are not independent since energy from one mode of oscillation leaks to the other mode through the spring. When the mass is bopping up and down on the spring, it slightly unwinds on the downward stroke and rewinds again at the upward stroke, inducing a twisting motion and reducing the up/down movement. And when the mass twists the spring, it slightly tightens or loosens the spring, causing an up/down bobbing movement and reducing the twisting movement. As you may have guessed these two modes of oscillation can interact with each other. When the movable weights on each of the pendulum's weight arms are located just right (ensuring that the oscillation periods of the up/down and twisting motion are close) and set in motion, the pendulum will periodically alternate between up/down movement and twisting in a way which is truly mesmerising to watch. This clip shows that the pendulum can be starting by either applying vertical movement or torsion to the spring, and it also demonstrates the importance of the correct placement of the little weight on the pendulum arms. Apart from being a classic and educational physics experiment, it is also fun to watch.
