In 1511, the Portuguese took control of Malacca on the coast of peninsular Malaysia, and maintained power here until 1645. During that time, many Portuguese men married Malaysian women, had children, and settled in Malacca. Today, there are descendants of these "mixed" marriages still living in Malacca, and they are known as the Kristang people. They speak Creole Portuguese, are Catholic, and just so happen to be extremely kind and welcoming. I wanted to go meet them.
