This presentation focuses on how an emphasis on statistical significance, or p .05, may be counterproductive to drawing meaningful conclusions from research. Reporting effect sizes can counteract this problem, and reporting clinical significance complements group analyses with individual outcomes. Effect sizes are complementary to significance testing in statistical analysis and have become a central part of research reporting. Clinical significance measures are highly pertinent in psychotherapy research, in which individual outcomes are paramount. Common scenarios are presented in which effect sizes and clinical significance measures are useful and indeed necessary to demonstrate relevance of findings to patients or clients.
