The rainbow trout, originally native to the Pacific rim stretching from Mexico to Kamchatka, Russia, is the number one cultured trout globally and is now found on every continent bar Antarctica. In 2011 Anders Halverson, an award winning journalist, fisherman and aquatic ecologist wrote a book entitled 'An Entirely Synthetic Fish'. The book detailed how in an attempt to establish Pacific salmon runs in the Atlantic states to replace the Atlantic salmon runs that had largely disappeard due to environmental degradation, rainbow trout inadvertently became the primary salmonid of America's burgeoning fish hatchery culture.
