Monod kinetics to determine microorganism in bioreactors

The empirical Monod equation (named after French scientist Jacques Monod) is the most common rate expression to describe the growth of microorganisms based on the substrate concentration. In this video in the bioreactor playlist, I will show how this equation bears similarity with Michaelis Menten kinetics for enzymes - similarly, you use a Ks, a "half velocity" constant at the substrate where you are at 50% maximum growth rate. I will also discuss what assumptions you make with this equation and what other equations you want might to consider if you take inhibition into account. At the end of the video there is an exercise where you can calculate the maximum growth rate using the equations provided.
