Nityam Bhagavata Seva #142: The churning of the ocean of milk begins with Devas and demons on either side of the mountain churning with Vasuki, the serpent. But the weight of the mountain makes it start to sink into the ocean. So the Lord takes the form of a divine tortoise - Kurma Avatar - to support the mountain on His back. Then the churning proceeds but instead of nectar, what comes out first is the poison called Halahala. So all the beings run to Lord Shiva for refuge to take care of this poison and they glorify Lord Shiva with a beautiful prayer.
