This engineering statics tutorial goes over how identifying symmetry in statics problems can often save a lot of work. Where symmetry exists, lots of work can typically be skipped, as each half of the structure will have the same values for internal forces. It’s important to note that symmetry must exist in both the structure’s shape, and the externally applied loads for this to be true. For example, a symmetrical structure with a non symmetrical load will still need to be fully calculated for every member.
