SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Harith al-Dhari, head of the Association of Muslim Scholars: "I call upon the Arab states, the Arab League and the UN to stop this (Iraqi) government and stop supporting it, or else there would be an inevitable disaster for Iraq and other countries, and it would be too late to regret it then. I call on the Arab governments that have supported the political process, and stood by it in the past, to withdraw their recognition from this government, and withdraw their support from it, otherwise they would be held to account by the Iraqi people." 4. Cameras STORYLINE: Iraqi Sunni leader Harith al-Dhari, who heads the Association of Muslim Scholars, held a news conference in Cairo on Saturday in an apparent response to calls by anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr for him to issue a religious edict condemning Sunni attacks on Shiites in Iraq. At the news conference, Al-Dhari said the Association of Muslim Scholars has repeatedly condemned the killing of Iraqi Muslims and attacks on their homes and mosques. He also condemned what he called Iraq's biased Shiite-dominated government, calling on Arab nations and the United Nations to end their support for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's administration. "I call upon the Arab states, the Arab League and the UN to stop this government and stop supporting it, or else there would be an inevitable disaster for Iraq and other countries, and it would be too late to regret it then," he told reporters. The remarks from both al-Sadr and al-Dhari reflect the sharp divisions between Shia and Sunni officials in Iraq, as sectarian violence across the country escalates. Last week, Iraq's Interior Ministry issued an arrest warrant against al-Dhari, saying he was wanted for inciting violence and terrorism. Baghdad remained under a 24-hour curfew two days after suspected Sunni insurgents killed 215 people in Baghdad's main Shiite district with a combination of bombs and mortars. Another 87 people were killed or found dead in sectarian violence across Iraq on Friday.
