Chief Obafemi Awolowo Arriving For Sentencing | Jailed For 10 Years For Treason | September 1963

Wednesday, September 11th 1963. Footage of the scenes outside a Lagos court where Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Nigerian politician and leader of the Action Group Party was sentenced to 10 years in prison for plotting to overthrow the federal government. He had been charged with Treasonable Felony, Conspiracy and the Possession of Firearms. Awolowo, who had been the premier of the Western Region, was among a group of party members sentenced. These included Chief Anthony Enahoro, who received a 15-year jail sentence the previous Saturday.
