Gustave Caillebotte | The Classical Impressionist

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter associated with the Impressionists. Caillebotte was born into a wealthy family in Paris in 1848. He grew up there, graduating with a law degree in 1868 and fought in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. Having dabbled in painting up to that point, after the war Caillebotte visited the studio of the painter Léon Bonnat who encouraged him to dedicate himself to his art. He enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1873, where Bonnat was a teacher. Caillebotte’s younger brother died in 1876. This convinced Gustave that his own life would be short and spurred him to greater efforts in his painting. In 1874 he had met many of the artists who would become the Impressionists and he determined to support the Impressionist cause. Using money from his inheritance, received following the death of his father in 1874, he provided much of the funds and drive behind organisation of the second Impressionist exhibitions and those that followed. He also provided much needed support to Monet who was regularly penniless. Having organised and participated in the Impressionist exhibitions, Caillebotte is considered an Impressionist, but his style is often quite different to most of the Impressionists. Some of his works, particularly early paintings, are very realist in style, reflecting his training by realist artists such as Léon Bonnat. But they address subjects dear to Impressionism, with a focus on light, and attempting to capture a moment in time. However, while most of the Impressionists focused on bucolic scenes, Caillebotte embraced the rapid industrialisation of the time often painting urban scenes of the new Paris, which was rapidly changing. He is also noted for using unusual viewpoints and perspectives. Caillebotte was largely forgotten after his death, partly because most of his paintings remained with family since he had been comfortably off and had not needed to sell his paintings to make ends meet. He began to be ‘rediscovered’ in the second half of the twentieth century as his family began to sell off his work. Gustave Caillebotte died in 1894 at the age of 45. —————————————————————————— Music Warm Memories by Keys of Moon Music Licence: Creative Commons Attribution SoundCloud   / keysofmoon   Youtube    • Warm Memories - Emotional Inspiring P...   —————————————————————————— #Caillebotte #Impressionism #arthistory #art #Claritas
