Embracing our best spiritual and sexual selves | Shaakira Abdullah | TEDxWidener University

Born and raised in a Muslim household, Dr. Shaakira Abdullah was never taught how to have a healthy balance between spirituality and sexuality; she had to learn how to become her best spiritual and sexual self on her own. In her talk she equips others—specifically those who identify as spiritual—to reclaim their sexuality in a way that coincides with their values. Because sex often feels taboo or like a “dirty word” in conservative religious communities, Dr. Abdullah helps others recognize that sexuality is part of the human existence. She seeks to extinguish sexual shame and help religious people have stronger self-esteem, better talks with their children and spouses about sex, experience more pleasure, and overall live happier and healthier sex lives. Dr. Shaakira Abdullah, also known as The Halal Sexpert, is a Sexologist with a Ph.D. in Human Sexuality and a Family Nurse Practitioner with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. She is passionate about providing sexuality education to the Muslim community from an Islamic Perspective based on their religious beliefs and values. Dr. Abdullah teaches courses for couples, singles, and parents and facilitates life-changing international retreats. Her goal is to help Muslims and people of faith learn how to maintain a comfortable balance between their spirituality and sexuality. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
