Full journey on board a Northern class 319 Electric Multiple Unit via Preston, Wigan and St Helens. This journey was filmed on the delayed 1703 Blackpool North to Liverpool Lime Street service on Monday 24th May 2021. Note that this service departed Blackpool almost 20 minutes late due to a signalling fault near Kirkham & Wesham. While the line from Liverpool to Preston was electrified but not from Preston to Blackpool North services operated just between Liverpool and Preston with other services taking passengers onwards to Blackpool, however once the route to Blackpool North was electrified through services along the whole route were restored. Services on this route from Blackpool to Liverpool operate at 1 train an hour throughout most of the day. There are additional services on all parts of this route including Northern and Avanti West Coast services from Blackpool North to Preston continuing to places such as York, Manchester, Birmingham and London as well as the hourly Blackpool South to Preston service which shares this route from Kirkham & Wesham onwards. Between Preston and Wigan this is the only passenger service to use the slow lines and to call at Euxton with all other services towards Wigan being non stop (Leyland gets Manchester via Bolton services stopping there). From Wigan to Liverpool there is 2 stopping services each hour and a limited number of TransPennine Express to/from Glasgow Central sharing the route. Between Huyton and Liverpool services from Manchester share the route and from Edge Hill to Liverpool services from Liverpool South Parkway share the route, but on separate tracks. A few years ago this service reversed at Lime Street and continued to South Parkway, this no longer occurs. All services are planned to be operated by EMU trains with either class 319 4 carriage units being used (as it is for this journey) or 3, 4 or 6 carriage class 331 CAF Civity units on other services. Although both classes of train operate the services on this route they can usually both work on any service and if 1 class is unavailable then the other can take over a service is possible. This route is electrified using overhead wires throughout but diesel trains regularly operate over most parts of this route on journeys which has parts which are unelectrified. The route from Blackpool North to Preston is 2 tracked with Preston to Wigan being 4 tracked for parts and 2 tracked for others. From Wigan to Edge Hill the route is 2 tracked with a 4 track section through Huyton and Roby stations. Although from Edge Hill to Lime Street the route is 4 tracked the northern pair of tracks are for services to/from Huyton with the southern pair being for services to/from Liverpool South Parkway.
