Join Misty and Bryce Murph'Ariens of Ontario Permaculture as they describe and demonstrate chinampas - the ancient indigenous wetland gardening technique which brings fertile growing space to otherwise unusable marginal areas. They grow and show three sisters guild planting and variations with sunflowers, sunchokes / girasol, tomatoes, corn, squash, pumpkins, beans, magenta spreen, and galinsoga, all from their Ontario zone 5b wetland marginal area. They highlight the value and efficiency of carbon neutral local transportation systems provided by canals. They muse on the possibilities and potentials of using clay and all local materials as a byproduct of canal making, for earth based houses, made from cob, wattle and daub, thatch, brick, or rammed earth (pisé de terre). They discuss permaculture principals, with a focus on valuing the marginal, and compare chinampas to other well known permaculture techniques like lasagna gardening / sheet mulching, and hügelculture.
