HOW TO START * STEP 1. BRAIN DUMP - I always start off with a brain dump, first thing in the morning. On weekdays when I wake up, I usually feel overwhelmed by the number of little things that need to be done and it can all feel very overwhelming until I get everything OUT on paper. STEP 2. PRIORITIZING - I do this in a make-shift Eisenhower matrix way where I prioritize tasks based on IMPORTANCE and URGENCY.The key here is to really really narrow down what you are prioritizing. I pick four every day just because that is the template I picked, but it can be tempting to add WHY more even though I struggle most days to get my four priorities met. STEP 3. BLOCK OFF TIME - The next thing I do is look at any appointments, meetings, or scheduled events I need to block off and I note where those are in my day. STEP 4. LOOSELY PLAN - I go in on the side and write a loose idea of when I think I’ll want to get things done, that way I don’t use space in the blocks but I can get an idea for my day. STEP 5. START TRACKING - Final step is to START TRACKING and be completely honest! If I spend an hour on Instagram or puttering around I literally write puttering. If you spend an hour pooping write it down. STEP 6. REVIEW & IMPROVE - The final step is to look back at these timesheets and start noticing which days felt the best and how they were set up! You’ll start to notice patterns in your time usage that feels the best, or feel the worst and you’ll start to be able to better plan/organize your days. Even if you don’t time block every day (I don’t EVERY DAY, but most days) doing a few days a week can help you to start recognizing these patterns and start naturally setting up your days better for yourself (even without time blocking).
