http://www.mybimmerspace.com (Please consult your repair manual when doing repairs) Thanks! In this video I repair an alternator by replacing the internal voltage regulator. Replacing the voltage regulator is a simple and easy fix. In this case, the regulator I am replacing was not capable of maintaining a voltage between 13 to 14 volts, instead it was jumping from 13 to 18 volts which was causing the A/C unit lights & instrument panel indicator lights to blink on and off (very bizarre). Replacing the voltage regulator instead of the complete unit is more cost effective considering the bearings in the alternator are in good shape. Common problems that can occur with a failed or failing voltage regulator are: dimming & brightening of the driving lights in relationship to engine rpm. (battery?) Instrument panel battery indicator light has a dim glow to it while engine is running. (Most noticeable at night) Battery indicator light is fully lit while engine is running. (alternator is no longer charging) Whistling from the alternator: This one can be tricky as most alternators make a faint whistle while operating. A high pitch whistle coming from the alternator could be a sign that one of the diodes are blown in the rectifier or the battery terminals are corroded. (Check all battery cable connections) A voltage regulator replacement will NOT fix this problem.
