A charred landscape and burnt properties was what many Greek residents of Rapentosa, Varnavas and Vrilissia returned to on Tuesday. Flames had reached the northern suburbs of Athens on Monday afternoon, prompting Greek authorities to issue a chain of evacuation orders in the country’s worst wildfire of the year. “It was hell. The fire started from very high up and it came all the way down to the village. It was running at great speed, it was very windy, there was panic, there were sirens, a lot of people, Police, people crying, screaming, shouting. And it reached and burned all the way down to Athens,” Varnavas resident Mina Katsiki recounted. For sculptor Vangelis Ilias in Vrilissia, who was returning from holiday when he learned that a wildfire was suddenly approaching his workshop, he was shocked as he never thought wildfires would reach so close. "Life has shown me many times that this is the way to go: I fall and then I rise again," he said. Greece's worst wildfire of the year eased on Tuesday, after it burned for three days, thanks to weaker winds, pausing progress of a destructive blaze that killed one person and torched cars, buildings, fields and forests.
