Jaffna Public Library is located in Jaffna. Started in 1933 as a private collection, it soon expanded. In 1981, it was one of the largest libraries in Asia home to almost 100,000 books, palm leaf manuscripts, newspapers, and magazines. On 31st of May 1981, Sunday, TULF held a rally. UNP send a gang of radical Sinhalese thugs from the south to the north of Sri Lanka. First the Sinhalese thugs use a method of provocation and intimidation - leading to 2 Sinhalese police constables being killed. Backed by the UNP, police and paramilitary this gang goes on a 3 day racist rampage in Jaffna killing innocent Tamil people and destroying many things. This included: Four innocent Tamils were taken from their homes at random and killed TULF members and general public was attacked TULF headquarters was burned Office of a Tamil newspaper Eelanadu was burned Hindu temple was destroyed Statues of Tamil cultural and religious figures were defaced and demolished Over 100 Tamil local businesses were looted, torched and destroyed Tragically - The JAFFNA LIBRARY was burned with all of its 100,000s of books and manuscript. This violent hateful act destroyed many valuable original pieces of Tamil history and culture.
