I had unreasonably high expectations for myself, which stemmed from a sense of inferiority, imposter syndrome, and other fundamentally flawed modes of thinking. I would tell myself, “It’s not worth doing unless it’s done perfectly”, “Don’t bother, it’s already been done better by someone else”, “You will embarrass yourself if you try”. Out of fear of not being good enough, I forbade myself from exercising my creativity, and disavowed my own ideas before they had any opportunity to flourish. As a result, my world became increasingly stifled and stagnant. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy and a vicious cycle, and I became paralysed with existential angst. I asked you to send me videos of yourselves demonstrating a special skill; anything you can do that you wanted to share. My hope was, firstly, to encourage you to take pride in what you have to offer the world, but also to stimulate your thinking surrounding what it is that makes you ‘you’. This is not to suggest that talents, accomplishments or merits are any kind of pre-requisite for self-worth. Nor to suggest that you need to excel at something in particular to have value, or that you should strive to be impressive in some way. I just wanted you to briefly look inside yourself for the things you take pride in, because sometimes we forget those things are there. For those who found something to share, as a thank you, I present you with my honest attempts at recreating your submissions. Most importantly, and regardless of whether you shared something or not, you’ve served the purpose of this video by simply having taken the time to look inwards as a source of inspiration.
