Existential Wordplay: Humans, Creativity, and AI Writing Games

A video/game of writing between humans and AI where presenters both discuss and show different uses of AI writing, experimenting with human and AI responses to existential questions, inviting participants to play the Existential Writing Game. In this video, a professor/writing program director and her research assistant talk about the implications of AI writing for composition classrooms and the existential questions generated by AI assisted writing. Including both research and human-to-human concerns, the two narrators engage in a dialog that includes these questions, as well as research and classroom practices, while also playing Existential Wordplay with AI to help them figure out the answers to these questions. This creative video combines research, disciplinary recommendations, and discussions of classroom practices alongside the very concerns that “writing humans” have right now as we reconsider both our writing practices and humanity in light of artificial intelligence. Approaching these concerns seriously but though a lighthearted, gamified approach where AI is a collaborator and contributor to these questions, this video will explore what AI can and cannot replicate about the complex states of being, and writing as, human.
