The video shows high-speed images (4000 frames per second) of the submerged arc welding process in a never seen resolution and detailedness. At most of the time, the wire with the molten droplet and the arc as the brightest occurrence in the video are clear visible in the center of the frames. Flux particles and molten slag mark the cavern walls. Metal-slag reactions are visible in the droplet stadium. The weldments were performed with a 4 mm diameter steel wire (EN ISO 14171: S2MoTiB) and agglomerated fluorid-basic flux (EN 760: S A FB1) on a mild steel plate joint (EN 10025: S355J2+N) with a V-shaped seam preparation and 60 ° opening angle. Weldments were realized by inverter power sources type LincolnElectric AC/DC 1000. The observation was performed with a high-speed camera combined with a telephoto lens and synchronized with a spectrograph and sensors for the electrical signals. To achieve a look inside the cavern, a thin steel-foil was formed to a tube with a diameter of few millimeters and attached to a special designed template. This viewing channel allowed a recording time of a second or less. Chemical and electrical analyses proved that there is no significant influence to the process by the observation method. The observation perspective is frontal with feed direction towards the observer. The angle is 22,5 ° inclined to the horizontal line so that the joint edges and weld pool are clear visible at most of the time.
