This lecture is was created for use in Thermodynamics for Mechanical Engineers at the Rochester Institute of Technology. In this lecture I continue to introduce techniques for improving the thermal efficiency of Rankine Cycles. This time, I discuss Rankine Regeneration cycles where we bleed a portion of the mass flow rate between a high and low pressure turbine. This hot mass flow rate is used to preheat fluid before it enters the boiler / steam generator. This increases thermal efficiency by reducing the amount of heat that we have to add in the boiler. While this also reduces the net work (because some of our mass flow doesn’t go through the low pressure turbine), the net effect is an increase in thermal efficiency. I go over regeneration cycles with open and closed feedwater heaters and provide a brief example for how to solve for the diverted mass flow rate and fix the state at the exit of the feedwater heater before the boiler.
