Oil painting time-lapse of "Saint Josephine Bakhita" by Tianna Williams. “I am definitely loved and whatever happens to me—I am awaited by this Love. And so my life is good.” —St. Josephine Bakhita Although I only learned of her recently, I was instantly captivated by this incredible woman’s serenity and deep trust in the Lord. Born in Sudan, Bakhita was sold into slavery as a child, horribly mistreated and cruelly scarred by different owners until she won her freedom in the Italian court and joined the Canossian Sisters in Venice. When speaking of her enslavement, she said, “If I were to meet the slave-traders who kidnapped me and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for if that did not happen, I would not be a Christian and religious today.” She was known for her gentle voice and her smile. Bakhita stands out to me as a supreme model of forgiveness—not only towards her human tormentors but also towards God, who she could easily have resented for having allowed her to experience such terrible injustices. Yet, even when she was still in captivity, she looked at the stars and recognized in her heart that someone must have made them—that perhaps he had a hand on her life. "Seeing the sun, the moon and the stars, I said to myself, 'Who could be the Master of these beautiful things?' I felt a great desire to see him, to know him and to pay him homage."— St. Josephine Bakhita When she finally discovered Christ in the Catholic faith, she did not hesitate to devote the rest of her life to him. With courage, she stood up to the men who would claim her as their property, for she had found her true Master, the lover of her soul. She had found the secret to true freedom, which is first and foremost an interior reality. This imbued her whole being with peace and joy, blessing everyone around her. And as the doorkeeper at her convent, her smile would have greeted everyone coming and going! What a beautiful example she is for our times—we who are so quick to run away from suffering even as we claim our victim status! May God give us the courage to live with the same grace and dignity which marked Bakhita's life. Saint Josephine Bakhita—pray for us! * * * To order a print: https://sacredartbytianna.com/product...
