Four days hiking the Ausangate Circuit including Rainbow Mountain. We were guided by Tinki Quechuans Hernan Quispe Crispan and Valerio Huanca Layme and hiked the whole circuit to Pacchanta where we took a taxi back to Cusco to catch our flight home. This was faster than the normal 5-6 days of trekking but we did not feel that it was too fast or difficult. Some of the most amazing, colorful scenery I’ve ever seen. The Quechuan people, the “Lost Incas”, have been living in the Andes for centuries, raising alpacas/llamas, creating beautiful clothing, surviving through very harsh mountain conditions and we were not only able to support the locals whose people have occupied and maintained these lands but we were able to experience their culture more intimately by traveling with community members and even learn just a little of their language. Also their amazing food, fresh fish, and pack animals to carry most of our gear was a major plus at altitudes where just moving your arms is difficult . If you are not giddy at the thought of seeing adorably-decorated, curious llamas led by women in traditional, colorful Peruvian attire, and free range dogs that hike along your side for sections of the beautiful trail, I don’t know what to do for you.
