The first bloom (ever!) on Logee's Perfume Flower Tree (Fagraea ceilanica)

We were in the middle of filming a different video when Logee's horticulturist and third generation owner, Byron Martin, happened to notice the first (ever!) bloom on the Perfume Flower Tree (Fagraea ceilanica). Byron had been trying for nearly 30 years to get this tree to bloom, and fortunately, the cameras were rolling and we captured Byron's genuine excitement for his discovery. Native to the forest of southeast Asia and India, the Perfume Flower Tree is a species of small tree in the family Gentianaceae which can grow up to 30 feet tall. Typically found in seasonal tropical forests, it is also grown as an ornamental tree in many places. Fragrant, creamy-white flowers fill the air with a delicate, sweet scent - but last for only one day. Named for Jonas Theodor Fagraeus, an 18th century Swedish naturalist, Fagraea ceilanica can be considered epiphytic. Its seeds germinate in cracks and branch joints of living tree trunks. The roots grow around the trunk down to the ground and the tree as support without harming it.
