ASHRAE, the CDC and the EPA recognize how indoor air quality impacts occupant short and long term health. The problem, adopting ASHRAE IAQ recommendations for improved IAQ often result in greater energy consumption at a time when the Department of Energy has determined and directed local authorities to adopt ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2019 into municipal building codes to increase building operating efficiency. First impressions suggest the DOE’s determination may conflict with national IAQ objectives to create healthier indoor environments. HVAC system designs, however, can span this perceived divide when more innovative approaches are applied. Before examining possible HVAC options to accomplish both national objectives, it is important that owners, architects, engineers and contractors have a common understanding of applied technical terms and methodologies to facilitate open dialog when evaluating proposed building requirements and available design strategies.
