Minimalist Design Surrounded by Boulders and Pine Trees | High Desert Retreat

On a rocky desert plateau, this residence is intimately nestled among a constellation of boulders, overlooking the Coachella Valley and the San Jacinto Mountain Range. The low-profile, three-bedroom house was designed to be a retreat for a couple seeking to escape their urban lives. Known as High Desert Retreat due to its location, it won the 2021 AIA Design Award in the interiors category. The house consists of a series of wooden volumes grouped under a large floating roof that provides relief from the intense sun. The project respects the environment, removing no Pinyon pine trees, a native species that can live up to 600 years. The main entrance is articulated by two concrete walls that guide occupants to the glazed entry. The interior is a combination of concrete, wood, stone, and steel, offering durability and a welcoming environment. The house also features courtyards formed by concrete walls around the trees and a pool that extends almost the entire width of the residence, providing spectacular views and integration with the desert landscape.
