PBM Mariner OS2U Kingfisher PBY Catalina Navy Film from 1942

Ride along for some gritty wartime footage showing the Martin PBM Mariner, Vought OS2U Kingfisher, and Consolidated PBY Catalina. Navy caption material says this footage is supplemental material for a film production about patrol pilots. The use of national insignia on both wings, minus red centers, suggests this film dates to 1942. Martin's massive twin-engine PBM Mariner flying boat had a wingspan eight feet bigger than a four-engine B-24 Liberator bomber. The PBM-3 in this film is powered by Wright R-2600 engines delivering 1700 horsepower each. Behind the engines, each nacelle contains an enclosed bomb bay. The Vought OS2U Kingfisher was a versatile scout aircraft that sometimes performed search-and-rescue duties. It cruised at one-hundred nineteen miles an hour at 5,000 feet, and had a service ceiling of 13,000 feet. More than one thousand five hundred Kingfishers were built, including some by the Naval Aircraft Factory. The Consolidated PBY Catalina was a 1930s design upgraded and produced until 1945. More than 3,300 Catalinas were built, including some by the Naval Aircraft Factory and plants in Canada, plus a small number of Soviet copies. Catalinas were important search and patrol aircraft from the beginning of the Pacific war. A float creeps into view in several scenes. Its parallel struts with bracing wires, and angled-cut aft end suggests the photo plane was a Grumman JRF Goose. A different float type in some scenes, with more struts and a pointed aft end, is like those of the PBM Mariner. You are watching the Airailimages Channel.
