King Mwami Mwambutsa IV of Burundi Meets Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta | Nairobi | November 1965

Thursday, November 4th 1965. The King, who survived a military coup the previous month, was on his way to Europe. The King's prime minster was shot and badly wounded in the abortive putsch which had been orchestrated by ethnic Hutu officers. At least 50 people were said to have been shot in its aftermath. The Army Gendemarie were enforcing military rule in his absence. Two further coups led by Colonel Michel Micombero, an ethnic Tutsi (of the Hima people), would enable Micombero to rise first to prime minister and then to president. Micombero's second coup abolished the Tutsi monarchy. Ntare V had been installed in place of his father Mwambutsa. Source of Footage: Reuters News Archive.
