Marsiya-khwani and Marsiya-nigari failed to survive for long period as compared to other genres of urdu poetry like Ghazal and Nazm. Despite being such an important genre which had strong hold on cultural, social and literary milieu, this literary tradition is at the verge of extinction. Many poets from the newly emerged Hali and Azad’s movement of modern poetry also wrote Marsiyas but the genre could not be revived back. The tradition of Marsiya recitation in Majalis also declined slowly and gradually. Ali Sardar Jafri, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and several other poets from progressive writers movement have written Marsiyas but could not make satisfactory mark on this literary tradition.
