I have been looking for how to remove platen on Olivetti Underwood typewriters. I searched many forums as well as videos, documents, etc.. Still, I could not find the solution. It seemed like impossible for me to remove the platen from the carriage. I was able to remove right side platen handle, but not left side. So I decided to remove the carriage from the base, then remove all parts from the carriage as much as I could in order to clean the platen itself. I restored 3 underwood typewriters, and finally I understood how to clean the entire body including the "impossible to remove platen". So if you are still looking for how to remove platen, this video is for you. By the way, I have been asked many times same questions such as "How long does it take to clean the typewriter like you did?" So I decided to record the time. In this typewriter, it took me around 14 hours total. Of course you can do this job much faster than me, since I always take a video footage, just observing each mechanism such a long time, etc... Another topic, this typewriter was kind of special modified version. The key of "1/2 1/4" was replaced with French Accent key. First, I noticed that one of the key's colors was different from others. I though someone messed around with it and replaced from another typewriter. But after careful examination, I found out that this was a special modification. It was really an amazing job.
