Curator's Perspective: "Vincent van Gogh and Japan"

Presented by Simon Kelly, curator of modern and contemporary art, Saint Louis Art Museum The Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh was intensely fascinated with the art and culture of Japan. Over the course of his career, Van Gogh painted copies of Japanese ukiyo-e prints and collected a range of Japanese art. Join lecturer Simon Kelly for a talk that examines the impact of japonisme on the artistic development of Van Gogh, including his use of the formal devices of ukiyo-e and the parallels that Van Gogh drew between Japan and the Provence region of France. See Van Gogh's work in Looking East: Western Artists and the Allure of Japan through May 11.
