Avalanche Safety and Risk Awareness

On April 20, 2024, we lost a friend. Rob Coppolillo lost his life in a ski accident in the Canadian Rockies, doing what he loved best: guiding. Rob epitomized adventure, pioneering as an AMGA and IFMGA Mountain Guide and founder of Vetta Mountain Guides. Among the first 100 Americans certified internationally, his expertise spanned three decades, guiding worldwide, from Boulder, Colorado, to Chamonix, France. Rob’s absence leaves a void felt deeply by the adventure community but his legacy of exploration and kindness will live on, reminding us to live life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed and remembered by the 57hours team. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Avalanche safety is paramount in the backcountry. This 57hours Adventure Talk focuses on what every backcountry skier needs to learn — avalanche safety, awareness and avoidance. One of the biggest dangers of skiing is avalanche terrain, and if you’re new to the backcountry, let IFMGA/AMGA Mountain Guide Rob Coppolillo teach you what you need to consider before leaving the groomers behind. From the avalanche safety courses you need to take to the avalanche safety gear you need to invest in, Rob shared some basic tools you can use on your backcountry journey. This Adventure Talk covers: How to lower your risks in backcountry conditions and avoid avalanche terrain What you need to consider before leaving the ski area Why formal avalanche training is essential to backcountry adventuring The three items of avalanche safety gear you need for backcountry touring Why touring with a guide offers immense value to new skiers This is not a replacement for formal avalanche education, but a primer on how to get started raising your level of risk awareness. With a little effort, humility, and willingness to learn, anyone can become a backcountry skier, and Rob will teach you about the importance of heading out with a guide and how they can help you prepare for backcountry adventuring in a safe way.
