Now in its third year, the Russo-Ukrainian war continues with no clear end in sight. Although Western countries have entertained the prospect of a negotiated settlement, the prevailing line remains to continue to support Ukraine "for as long as it takes". Yet if the status quo is not delivering the desired results as Russian troops advance, and a drawback in support cannot be contemplated for political and geopolitical reasons, that leaves escalation as the only remaining option. The absence of political will to engage in diplomacy with Russia and develop a clear endgame for the war may be an important driving factor behind the rise of populism likely to be witnessed in this June's elections to the European Parliament. Rather than defending the "liberal international order", the existing Western posture with respect to Russia and Ukraine may be undermining it.
