A common concern of scoliosis patients is when they are told that their scoliosis has rotation or they are told they have rotoscoliosis. Scoliosis is a tridimensional misalignment of the spine, and to understand rotoscoliosis, we must keep this in mind. Every case of scoliosis will have some associated rotation, normally rotating inwards toward the cavity where the curve is in. For example, it is rare to see a scoliotic curve going left and the spine going right. If an unnatural rotation like this were to occur, it is certainly something more than just scoliosis. The more severe a curve becomes, the more rotation starts to happen. For example, an 80-degree curve will show severe rotation, but a 25-degree curve will have a lot less rotation in comparison. Rotoscolisis can also mean a patient has a higher level of expected rotation due to their curve type. Still, there is no exact way to determine that specific degree of rotation. This is the case with infantile scoliosis, you can see there is a misalignment, but there is no telling how big of rotation it will have in the future. The symptoms associated with rotoscoliosis are exactly the same as scoliosis: Postural changes Uneven hips Uneven shoulders Clothes that do not fit properly Uneven waist Asymmetrical space between arms and legs And patients will have more than average rotation depending on the scoliosis size.
