This is a brief video of the first successful print from my new UP! Mini 3D Printer. DESCRIPTION / SETUP IMPRESSIONS BELOW Thanks everyone for liking my videos and subscribing :) See my channel for more things I like! twitter: / lachlikesathing The model is the 'Cute Octopus Says Hello' starter model by Makerbot, found here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27053 INTRODUCTION I have been saving up for a 3D printer for some time. I have been very excited about the potential for this technology. I was a little hesitant about buying a 3D printer because I have no formal design / CAD skills. However, seeing a 3D printed modded Fostex T50RP • The First 3D-Printed Production Headp... and playing around with some of the currently available design software for 3D printers finally got me to take the plunge! The UP! Mini 3D is a 3D printer from the Beijing based company PP3DPP http://www.pp3dp.com/ I purchased it from http://3dprintingsystems.com/ the Australian distributors of these printers. All up it cost me $1300 AUD including shipping and taxes. I chose the UP! Mini 3D for a few reasons: 1. It's small. 2. It prints ABS plastic. (Many figurines and headphone parts are made of ABS). 3. It uses generic spools of ABS which means I can purchase different colours and types from any supplier. 4. It has a fully enclosed steel chassis which leaves it less vulnerable to temperature variation. 5. The reviews I could find were promising. 6. It is relatively cheap by 3D printer standards. SETUP The manufacturer claims that the UP! Mini can be setup to print in 15 minutes. This may be true if you have ever used a 3D printer before. I found the instructions to set up the printer quite vague and confusing. I tried to make a video of the setup process but it took so long (2 hours or so) and was so disheartening that I did not upload the footage because I thought it reflected poorly on the experience once it was all set up. Here are my issues with the set up: 1. Please, PP3DP, choose a different protective plastic film for the front and top lids. It is sticky and does not come off easily. It took me 30 minutes alone to remove the film and I had to use a solvent later on to remove the residue left behind. 2. There was a random piece of cable tie inside the printer. This does not bode well for quality control. 3. The instructions in the quick start guide are vaguely worded and the accompanying pictures / diagrams were not particularly clear. For instance, it took me some time to work out what the 'tube' was until I referred to the earlier parts list. There is a mystery part included with the accessories box which I still don't know the purpose of. PRINTING Once the printer was all setup, the experience was relatively smooth. I tried to print a detailed figurine model for my first two prints but was unsuccessful. I was too ambitious in my enthusiasm because there is a little learning curve in understanding what the printer can print and what is required in terms of the stability of the model / strength of the support material. My third print, the Octopus model in the above video, came out perfectly! I've printed a number of things since then and have been very impressed with the results. I am going to use the printer to do some headphone modding projects as well as some other creative projects. I am excited about making a new series of videos about my 3D printing adventures! :) ISSUES Here are my current issues with the UP! Mini: 1. The latest v2 software for the printer on Windows 8 fails to launch at all on my Surface Pro. I have been using the Mac version of the software instead, but this version cannot update the ROM firmware on the printer. 2. The Mac software will stop responding and then crash if the computer goes to sleep while the software is running. RANDOM THOUGHT 3D printers make all kinds of interesting noises. They are really quite mesmerising to watch and listen to. Or at least, I think so. It might be plastic fumes getting to my head.
