With the West Coast Main Line closed north of Carlisle and virtually nothing running south of the city, Citadel station was unusually quiet today. During the three-and-a-half hours that I spent on the platforms only one freight train appeared and two Trans Pennine Express services running only between Carlisle and Preston. Oliver Bullied's Battle of Britain class light Pacific, Tangmere, supported by 57 316 Alnwick Castle brought in Northern Belle's Settle and Carlisle Steam Special from York and Wakefield. I've concentrated today on showing some of the tasks which have been automated out of existence by the modern railway. We too easily forget that railway work was not only arduous - it was potentially very dangerous, too. Enjoy!
