Visualizing Cult of The Mother of God in

The cult of the Virgin has been a subject of numerous scholarly inquiries, which include Medieval Georgian icons of the Mother of God. But hitherto no comprehensive analyses of visual sources reflecting the ideological and religious dimensions of the cult of the Virgin in medieval Georgia have been done. Professor Nina Chichinadze discusses how the cult of the Virgin is embodied in the medieval icons and their iconography. The main Mariological icons perceived as miracle-working images (the icons of the Virgin from Atskhuri, Khakhuli, Tsilkani, Vardzia) played a significant part in the religious and political-ideological life of the medieval Kingdom of Georgia. Professor Nina Chichinadze will focus on the origins of veneration of the Mother of God and its history from the early medieval period to early 13th c. The devotional images of the Virgin were focal objects of royal patronage and were actively involved in construction of ideological concepts. Professor Nina Chichinadze will consider cultural and sematic dimensions of the cult icons and the role they played within ideological developments of the 10th – 12th cc.
