Some of my favorite rapids in Browns Canyon. Team River Runner (TRR), a veterans whitewater kayaking organization, held its annual three day training camp in Buena Vista, Colorado on the Arkansas River during Memorial Day weekend. Approximately 45 veterans attending from the Denver, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs, and Montrose Colorado chapters. This was my first Browns Canyon run. I was anxious about the run the previous night, with some sleepless moments. But, once on the river with friends, all that disappeared, and the fun began. Our put in was from our camp, somewhere along the Milk Run. The weather started as sunny and low 50's and rose to about 60 degrees. Once we entered Browns Canyon, it became cloudy, temps dropped, and with periods of light rain. We had 10 hard shells, 4 inflatables, and two rafts on the river. I ran sweep. All the lines were, in my opinion, predictable except for Toilet Bowl Rapids. My favorite rapid was Zoom Flume. I had a clean run, and we had four swimmers.
