Historic Coal Mine Fan House Remains Deep In The Woods

Located in a very remote area lies the remains of an historic coal mine fan house. The fan house and air shaft were most likely constructed around 1908-1915 for a large underground coal mine that was operating in the area from 1900-1935. The air ventilation fan was built by the Crawford & McCrimmon Company. Many coal mines in Alabama used this company's mine ventilation fans during this era. The air shaft when in operation was housed in a large building that covered both the fan, shaft and engine that turned it. Research indicates that the fan operated on steam generated power and then later converted to electric. It is extremely rare to see such a historic mine ventilation fan still in existence let along in place. For obvious safety reasons the location or mine name cannot be given.
