Local Vendors Pitch Grocery Products

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Shopping for groceries is part of every family's regular routine. Nationwide the desire from these shoppers is for more local, healthier foods. Thursday, grocery store chain Winn-Dixie hoped to answer that trend by meeting with local food vendors right here in Mobile. Thirteen local vendors got the big chance to pitch their products, an opportunity they say doesn't happen often. "When you go through the regional channels, the corporate channels, for instance with the other stores you have to go through the corporation and go through all the bureaucracy of it. So this kind of cuts the bureaucracy out of it and just makes it very simple and easy," said John Serda. Serda was at the store selling blends from his Mobile store, Serda's Coffee Company. Lisa Emanuelli of Kanundrumz Bakery says it's all about the face-to-face conversation. "I can't tell you how nice that is, for them to actually come to this area, leave their corporate offices, come here and let us do our dog and pony show." That show lasts only 10 minutes. In that time Winn-Dixie reps hear the vendor's pitches and taste their product for the first time. For the local merchants getting their product on this grocery store aisle can mean big business but for Winn-Dixie it also means another opportunity to enhance their image as a local grocery store. "I don't think we get credit for what we do but it is one of our operating principles," said Winn-Dixie's local business manager Adonis Paseiro. The battle to be "local" is nothing new. It is also part of the strategy of New Orleans based grocery store "Rouses" that is opening 6 stores in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Winn-Dixie says it will announce which vendors made the cut two weeks from now.
