W.S. Edgerly Eyewitness Account Reveals Dark Narratives Of Custer’s Last Stand

On June 25, 1876, Montana's vast open plains witnessed a pivotal and notorious clash - the Battle of Little Bighorn. As the dust cleared and the gunfire ceased, the aftermath began to unfold. A young officer, Winfield Scott Edgerly, was among the handful of survivors of Custer's doomed 7th Cavalry. In his compelling testimony, Edgerly shares the shocking events of that disastrous day, from the first clashes to the last-ditch defense. With straightforward honesty and vivid description, Edgerly recreates the turmoil, bravery, and devastating loss of Custer's infamous final battle, revealing its lasting impact. On June 25, 1876, around 10 o'clock, we halted about fifteen miles from the enemy's camp. General Custer went up a hill with scouts to view the Indian camp, which was in plain sight. After returning, he gathered the officers to share his findings. He said our presence had been discovered, and his scouts had chased a few Indians, but they escaped and warned the others. With surprise lost, we'd launch a direct attack. Custer believed the Indians wouldn't resist our whole regiment and would flee once they saw us approaching. He called for a straightforward assault on the village. General Custer ordered the troop commanders to prepare their men. Within a minute, everyone was ready. He and Adjutant Lieutenant Colonel Cook divided the regiment into four battalions, each led by a senior officer: Major Reno, Lieutenant Colonel Benteen, Major Keogh, and Captain Yates. Major Reno was tasked with attacking the Indian village directly down the valley, with support to follow. Lieutenant Colonel Benteen was sent off to the left at a 45-degree angle to engage any Indians. The plan was to drive the Indians either right or left, making it easier for the other battalions to surround and defeat them. This tactical division aimed to exploit the enemy's potential flight routes. #history #custer #americanhistory #documentary #battleofthelittlebighorn #littlebighornbattlefield #wildwest #oldwest #nativeamerican #nativeamericanhistory
