I vowed to get revenge last weekend on Castle Peak 100k: My first 100k two years ago and the one that kicked my ass the most. Unfortunately, the redemption will need to happen another day. The course was definitely more difficult than the 2019 course. The new additions: the Frog Lake and the Warren Lake out and backs were brutal with the Warren Lake to Castle Valley segment to be the hardest 5 miles I’ve ever experienced. Also, the 40 degree grade first mile was cruel. I almost became a human avalanche several times. I DNF’d at the Castle Valley cutoff by 14 min. Despite this, I can’t help to be proud of the experience of completing half of what is considered to be the toughest 100k in the West. I’ve certainly learned more than I did before and weathered through crazy conditions like poor air quality, high altitude, heat, and sleep deprivation. It was nice seeing so many familiar faces and embracing the suck together. The aid stations and volunteers were phenomenal and I had a blast at each one. Running along the Castle Peak Ridge was heavenly. It made the journey to get there worth it and I was so happy to at least get to that point. I’ll get my revenge yet. Third time should be a charm 😂
