"One Country" by Midnight Oil

On a Saturday morning back in 1990 on a pleasant spring day in southern California, a song came on the radio as I was driving on the 110 Pasadena freeway entitled, "Blue Sky Mining." It had a layered-instrumental opening hook that just caught my ear--as music hooks are supposed to do!--and the rest of the song thereafter was unlike anything I had ever heard on the radio. I didn't catch all the lyrics, but it sounded like the singer was singing about important matters. I kept thinking, "I hope the DJ back announces whose song this is." Fortunately, he did. It was by some group I had never heard of called Midnight Oil. I later learned it was an Australian band that was noted for its socially conscious music. Later that afternoon, I found the album CD in a Musicland record store, went home and played it. That's the day I became a lifelong fan of the group. Another song on this album is actually my favorite from the album. It's called, "One Country." For years I have wanted to create my own video of the song because it has a certain epic-sweep quality to it. And now, thirty-four years later, I have finally done so. A lot has changed in that time. I no longer live in southern California, but I'm still a fan, and Midnight Oil is still making socially conscious music about things that matter to us all.
