Building an Owl Nest Box for the Barred Owl in the Canadian Wilderness

The Barred Owl's range extends across eastern North America. The northern most part of it's range includes the area of my cabin. I occasionally see these owls and consider them one of my favourite animals. A friend of mine is a bird expert, and suggested that I build an Owl Nest Box on the property. I researched various plans, and used materials that I had at the cabin to complete the build. The structure is quite simple and consists of a 13x13" floor plan with walls approximately 23" tall. The hole is 7" diameter. For my owl nest box, I used boards I had sawn for the wood shed, and made the roof out of cedar planks. From what I have read, these boxes do best when they are within 200 feet of water, and near a forest that is somewhat immature. Owls will normally nest in hollowed tree trunks of large trees. In forests that do not provide this habitat, the owl nest box can be a nesting option for the owls.
